Chapters Twenty-One and Twenty-Two Summary
Cassie is becoming more comfortable with the Lakotas, and goes out hunting herbs with Dorothea now that the snow has melted. Cassie learns that their word for white, "wasicun", means fat greedy person in Lakota. Dorothea tells her some people are born with a disease in their soul; Cassie silently defends Alex. Dorothea values "hybrids" for their endurance, making a subtle reference to William.
Alex has been lying to people, saying he has been in touch with Cassie. Attending the Academy Awards with his co-star, who would like to be friendlier with him, Alex is missing Cassie. Will returns to Pine Ridge on leave to take Cassie to watch the Oscars at a local bar. Cassie has fit into the tribe more easily than Will had. They watch the Barbara Walters interview with Alex, which was aired...
