Chapter Seventeen Summary

Afraid that Alex will think she has nothing to do, Cassie, although very tired, makes herself look busy. Alex has had a private laboratory built for her, has had her portrait painted, attended her lectures, and has been a model husband. He still gets angry, but she is not afraid of him and is more concerned for his feelings than her own pain.

When he finds his sneakers full of cat pee, he rages and shoves her, but leaves for a run before doing any further damage. Cassie is left with Herb Silver at the premiere of Alex's movie; Ophelia is his date, dressed, as usual, in one of Cassie's dresses. Cassie has not had time to read the script, and the movie turns out to be about an abusive spouse. Alex promises her he is acting.
