America

Throughout the play, America represents opportunity, possibility, and hope. This is particularly true for Gar, who was inspired to feel that way by his aunt Lizzy. What she and Gar both see as America's unconditional welcome and support are represented, in turn, by the presence of Lizzy's friend Ben, who accompanied her and her husband Con on their visit to Ireland, the visit in which the idea of Gar moving to America was first suggested as a possibility, and then became a reality.

Music

For much of the play, Gar experiences music as a means of escape from the dreariness and routine of his life. It also represents a validation of, and a reminder of, his deeper feelings.
