Izzy
Isabelle “Izzy” Poole is a single teenage mother when the novel begins, having conceived through an affair with her art teacher, and having been left alone when he committed suicide. Izzy is sweet, compassionate, and determined to have her baby. While trying to save and plan for life by working with, and relishing the moral encouragement of Mr. Tannehill, Izzy is recommended for, and accepted into the IFP. Izzy is both intrigued and uncertain about the IFP, as it expands her role as a mother though denying her a closer link at first to her own biological child (whom she names Cap). Izzy feels as if the extra support she has in parenting helps her, but she stresses about the insular nature of the IFP, and the lack of exclusive time she has with Cap early on.
