Isaac Dan der Grimnebulin

Isaac, the lead character, is a research biologist who passionately collects a myriad of winged creatures, both animals and insects, for his study of flight. As a pure homo sapiens, Isaac is somewhat unique in the strange world of New Crobuzon, populated by all manner of life forms, many of them apparent genetic flukes that combine structures and traits of different species. Isaac is obsessed with his work and determined to understand everything about flight so he can restore it to those who have lost it and give it to those who want it. Isaac is described as a "big, dark-skinned man" and "a dirigible." Although a brilliant scientist, at home Isaac is a coarse, vulgar man of base appetites and pleasures.
