Chapters 5-7 Summary
In chapter 5, Chee goes to see his predecessor, Henry Becenti. Becenti tells Chee that relations between the tribal police and Sena were destroyed in the aftermath of an explosion at an oil well in which Sena's brother was killed. Sena was convinced the explosion, which happened while the men were lowering nitroglycerin into the oil well, was intentional even though all the evidence pointed to an accident. When Sena learned a group of roustabouts did not got to work that day because their peyote chief had a vision that something was going to happen, Sena arrested the peyote chief, Dillon Charley. The tribal police wanted Charley because they felt it was their jurisdiction, causing the friction that still exists between the tribal police and Sena.
