Chapters 21 and 22 Summary
One day, Mr. Mulligan shows up after school wearing a suit and tie, and carrying Penny's favorite ice cream. After Me-me brings in cookies and lemonade, he nervously asks Penny for her permission to marry her mother. She thinks he should probably be asking Pop-pop instead, but he tells her that her mother wanted her to give her permission first. She lets him fumble for words for a minute or two before letting him off the hook. The wedding is simple and Penny gets to be both maid of honor and flower girl. Frankie twines flowers all around her sling. Mr. Mulligan says Penny can call him anything she wants, so she calls him Pat for now.
Things are a little different after he moves in. He even manages to deal with Pop-pop, and Penny's mother finds the confidence she needs...
