Chapter 9 and 10 Summary
Penny gets home to find her mother getting ready to go out, wearing a new dress. She tells Penny that Mr. Mulligan has invited her out for dinner and dancing. Penny asks if they have gone out before, how long they have been dating and then notices that her mother is no longer wearing her engagement ring. Eleanor tells Penny they'll talk in the morning as she wants to get ready and Penny, stunned, goes to her room. It is almost midnight before her mother returns. Penny sees that as Mr. Mulligan helps her out, he kisses Eleanor on the lips. At that moment, Scarlett O'Hara pees on the carpet, echoing Penny's feelings exactly.
That Saturday, Eleanor invites Mr. Mulligan to come by and watch the game with Penny. He comes over, but never stops talking. Finally, Penny just tells him...
