Importance: The opening lines of Peak's account foreshadow the lessons he will learn about his family, his life, and himself. At the novel's start, Peak identifies himself as a climber and as the son of talented climbers. However, throughout the novel, he will discover that these facets of his background are not all that define him. On Mount Everest he learns that he has little control over natural forces, but that what he can control is how he behaves and how he invests in others.
