Summary

Otto wakes up just as the train stops to let on a maintenance team. He chooses not to wake Xavier up, so they do not leave the train. Xavier wakes up when Chela comes in, seemingly running away from someone. Otto sees a man carrying a dip-net and describes him as a mongoose-catcher. Although Otto is looking directly at him, he finds it difficult to process or remember his facial features. Otto follows the man out into the hallway, where he sees him jump out of the moving train. Xavier later tells Otto that he did not see anyone. Allegra arrives on the scene and asks Otto and Xavier not to cause so many disturbances. Otto and Xavier retire to their carriage, where Chela joins them and Árpád.
