Chapters 17 - 18, The Little Man's Country, Winning Her Hand Summary

Reuben waits for Davy to find him just after midnight. Reuben is scared and sorry he asked to see where they were. Davy picked him up silently with Fry, his horse; he tells Reuben that they're going to see a man named Mr. Waltzer and a girl named Sara. Eventually they reached a cabin and Reuben meets Mr. Waltzer.

Mr. Waltzer makes them some food in a cabin Reuben sees as dilapidated. A few minutes after they start talking, Mr. Waltzer invites Sara, his fourteen-year-old daughter, in to meet Reuben. He lives in the cabin because it "is a safe place to wait for change" and met Davy at a hitching post. He asks Reuben to keep his eccentricities a secret.
