Summary

In Chapter 1, a red fox named Pax was on alert when he smelled rabbit. His mate, Bristle, was constantly hungry. Recently, Pax had been unable to find enough for her to eat because so many of the young animals he found were dead.

Pax, Bristle, and Bristle’s brother named Runt had claimed the Deserted Farm as their home. They felt safe because there were no humans around. Pax was proud when Bristle told him they were expecting kits.

In Chapter 2, Peter planed the boards on the floor of his cabin. Vola said they were flat enough to sand, but Peter wanted them perfect. When he cut his hand on the plane, Peter remembered how he had cut his leg in a promise that he would return for his pet fox, Pax. The cut left a scar.
