Part 2: Chapters 26-28 and Epilogue Summary

In chapter 26, all the regular costumers, except one, rally around Harriet as she struggles with her illness. This one, Evelyn Bright, is badgered by Patty Jane until she too begins appearing at the House of Curl once again. When Harriet learns that her cancer is not responding to treatment, she takes Patty Jane to a department store to help pick out a wig.

In chapter 27, Reese has taken a leave of absence from work and moved into Patty Jane's with Harriet. Harriet is concerned that Nora is avoiding her, so she makes Reese take her to the hamburger restaurant where Nora works. They pick Nora up and go for a drive, talking honestly about her illness.
