Part 1: Chapters 3-5 Summary

In chapter 3, no one is thrilled with Patty Jane's pregnancy. Thor, who lost his father at a young age, is not ready to be a father. Harriet believes that Patty Jane has been caring for people all her life and should have some time to herself before taking on a child. However, Patty Jane is awed by her changing body and excited about impending motherhood. Ione visits the newlyweds often and is pleased with their open affection for one another. However, as Patty Jane's pregnancy becomes obvious, Ione begins to notice her son is not as affectionate with Patty Jane as he was before. Patty Jane and Ione have never been close, but Ione feels closer to Patty Jane during her pregnancy, especially when Patty Jane agrees to go to church with her on Christmas Eve.
