Summary
Patsy arrives in America, and has waited outside the airport for two hours looking for Cicely. Finally, Cicely finds Patsy. Cicely has come to pick Patsy up at the airport with what Patsy understands to be her play-husband who helped her get a visa, Marcus. He barely pays attention to her when she gets in, looking right through her. As Marcus pulls away from the airport, he cuts into a line of traffic and says, "Damn immigrants don't know how to drive" (70). Cicely talks incessantly, and Patsy is annoyed, particularly because her friend has an American accent now. Cicely sneaks glances at her husband as if she is performing for him.
Though Patsy seems to find Cicely and Marcus' house impressive as they arrive, there are also foreboding signs, like "gargoyle-looking things" on the roofs and a "flight of black birds" (71). As...
