Chapter 14, Second Chances Summary
Sean Miller and Alex are ready and waiting for Dr. Cathy Ryan to leave the hospital and are irritated because for the first time since they have been tailing her, she is late. Dr. Ryan has just finished an emergency eye surgery on a young boy who went face-first through a plate glass window. Her strict adherence to regimentation causes Cathy to work her Porsche 911 hard in order to make up for lost time. She picks up Sally at daycare, and though she notices her daughter playing with her seatbelt, Cathy does not reprimand her. Cathy's eyes are on the road. At that moment, Cathy notices a van beside her and instinctively brakes just as Miller opens fire. The foot-long tongue of flame is seen by a patrol car behind Cathy Ryan.
