Chapters 19 & 20, Epilogue Summary
Memphis, Egypt: 3100 BCE. Luce falls out of the Announcer in the middle of the Pharaoh's receiving room in ancient Egypt. Sensing movement, the Pharaoh immediately calls for Luce to bring him his wine and his dogs. Startled, Luce mumbles, "Yes, Pharaoh," and hurries from the room in search of her past self, a servant girl named Layla. Bill informs Luce that Layla is in love with Donkor (Daniel's past self) but Donkor is engaged to the Pharaoh's daughter, Auset. While Luce would have normally thought this star-crossed love affair to be romantic, she now sees it as tiresome and unfair to Daniel. As she paces through the gardens, a young woman runs up and angrily grabs Luce around the waist, calling for the guards to take away this thief! The girl is Auset, who wants to have Layla locked away for...
