Chapters 3 & 4 Summary
Milan, Italy: 1918. When Luce stumbles out of the Announcer, she immediately hears explosions. She hears grunting and crying, and realizes that she is standing atop a fallen soldier's body. She is not in Moscow any longer, but in the midst of the First World War. Although she feels like she is going to vomit, Luce does what she can to calm the dying soldier, and she realizes that in this life she was a nurse. She locates the nurses' trailer away from the battle zone and rushes over. Once she slips into her regulation uniform, she is ordered to load an ambulance full of soldiers headed toward the field hospital. Terrified, Luce wonders what she should do when faced with all these dying men. She hears a dripping sound and realizes that it is the blood dripping from one of her charges. The...
