Summary
Feng-Li runs to her room. She still has the paper from the fortune cookie on her wall, but she throws it away. The next day, Feng-Li finds Jia-Xi again in bed. Jia-Xi refuses to get up to go to the hospital. As Feng-Li rides her bike through the neighborhood, she sees an older woman working in a flower bed. When the woman hurts her back, Feng-Li rushes to help. Feng-Li helps the woman to the porch, then finishes planting the flowers. The woman gives her money and thanks her.
At the hospital, Ke-Gang is still unconscious. Feng-Li talks to him about all the things that have gone wrong. At home, Feng-Li puts the money from the woman into a jar with Chinese words on the label. The English translation indicates this is for airplane tickets for her parents.
