Summary
Chapter 6 opens with Mei Ling’s assessment of the living quarters on the ship. She is disappointed by the cramped space and bunk beds, sensing that perhaps her husband is not the successful merchant the matchmaker had said he is. She falls asleep quickly and awakens to the sound of Bo and a little girl playing nearby. The girl is a Dragon, she explains to Mei Ling, and is acting out dragon sounds to entertain Bo, who is a Monkey. The girl follows Bo and Mei Ling up to the deck, where they reunite briefly with Kai Li, who is strangely aloof. The little girl clings to Bo, and introduces herself to Mei Ling as Siew. Her uncle, she says, pointing to a man in a suit on a higher deck, is rescuing her from her orphanage and taking her to America. Back...
