Summary
In Chapter 22, “Tammy,” Kim called Tammy to say Tony had “been hit by a car” (230). Tammy raced to the hospital. She sat with Kim in the waiting room. Tony was in surgery. Kim comforted herself with the statistical unlikelihood of Tony dying “within a day of his own father’s death” (232). Tammy felt overwhelmed. When the surgeon emerged, she knew Tony was dead.
In her “childhood room,” Tammy hurled her possessions “at the window,” unsure if she “was angry at” herself or her father (234). Instead of calling Vince, she “had called . . . Oliver” (234).
When the neighbor returned the trash bin, Tammy slammed it repeatedly on the ground, laughing. She thought she saw Tony coming towards her. It was Oliver. She kissed him and he “didn’t pull away” (237). He held her as she cursed the people who had killed Tony.
