Lena
Lena is the main protagonist in the novel. For most of Lena's life, she follows what has been told to her. As a child she had known that there was a disconnect between reality and what was being told to her by the government and the DFA. Though she had not thought about unfairly how people were treated, she had also believed that people would be happier once they had had the cure and that being infected with "love" was a death sentence.
Lena's suspicion of the government and the idea of being cured no doubt stems from the fact that her mother was arrested and put in solitary confinement for resistance. Lena had always suspected that her mother escaped when the prison was bombed and prisoners broke free, but she had not seen her mother since the day that she was taken away.
