Chapter 1 Summary

Chapter 1, Now

Lena is a new student in high school. She doesn't know any of the other students or any of the teachers. She's worried that they will all know that she's not cured—she's worried that they'll think she has a disease and she'll be caught. During class she flashes back to Alex—a boyfriend to whom she alludes something bad has happened.

Chapter 1, Then

Lena escapes into the Wilds and is rescued by Raven. She notices that Raven has the mark of the cured, but many people at the homestead do not and male and females co-mingle and co-habitate together.

When Lena is initially rescued she is very thin and very ill. It takes her many days until she is strong enough to walk around on her own. Sarah, another girl on the homestead, gives Lena a tour once...
