Summary
A bushwhacking captain’s wife visits Luiza, calling her Zibatra. She asks for help dissuading her husband from his work, which he persists with even though he has won his freedom already by it. Luiza-Zibatra says there is nothing she can do for her.
Almeyda has a vision induced by oil in glass of water. She sees a column of canoes traveling on a river and Barcala in a tavern. The whole exercise, supervised by Luiza, frustrates Almeyda. She says she wishes to see Anninho, not Barcala. Luiza grows stern with her. Almeyda then contracts malaria again and Luiza drains the parasites from her, drawing her blood out and pricking her to heal her. Later, a housekeeper from a nearby plantation visits Luiza.
