Summary
Martina Puerreydon, with her children, comes the house where Almeyda, Old Vera, Barcala Aprigio and Martim Aprigio and Joanna are residing. They all insist that they will descend from the mountains in search of the new Palmares. Thus, Almeyda is left alone in the house. She soon becomes feverish and lapses into deep sleep, caused by malaria. When she awakes, a man named Jaguaribe is with her. He has come with Mexia and their child as he used to live in the house where Almeyda is residing. He fled when the battle for Palmares broke out. He says he lived in a cave for a period and had contact with fleeing members of the quilombo. Almeyda asks about Anninho.
