Summary
Almeyda recovers from her bout with malaria but still has feverish visions. The white woman captured by the Palmaristas is returned to her father, who has presumably paid her ransom. Almeyda describes a silent woman who lives alone in Palmares known as Our Lady of Solitude. She paints all the Catholic saints as Africans.
Anninho tells Almeyda that he is determined to leave Palmares. He says they can slip away before the big battle for the quilombo starts because he has been sent into Porto Calvo to collect weapons for King Zumbi. That evening Almeyda fries some fish she has caught in the local river for her and Anninho to eat. Unbeknownst to her, the fish are poisonous. Anninho thus thinks she was trying to poison them rather suffer the fate of deserters, but Almeyda insists that she had...
