Summary
In Chapter 4, Zyuganov’s background in the SVR is described in the opening of this section. He was given a job because his mother, Ekaterina Zyuganova, was an important leader in the KGB. Because of his temperament and inability to work with people, Zyuganov was in danger of being fired but his mother eventually found a place where her son excelled. He was given a job as one of the four subcommandants in the Lubyanka prison, a job that required him to torture and execute prisoners. When the KGB dissolved and Zyuganov’s position no longer needed, his mother saw to it that her son was placed third in line for the position of chief of the counterintelligence department.
