Chapter 7 Summary

Pitt drives to and boards the Martha Ann, the salvage ship. He talks to a visiting Commander Denver, who tells him of something strange that happened nine months ago when their oceanographic ships were charting the bottom of the Kurile Trench near Japan. They detected the sound of a high speed under water submarine traveling at 110 M.P.H. at nineteen thousand feet. Both ships had identical readings and a similar event happened at the Cayment Trench near Cuba. Denver also relates a story of picking up strange sounds on a microphone near Iceland.
