Summary
In Chapter 6, Sunja believes that Hansu will ask her to marry him. In her view, “she belonged to him” (47). Hansu has gone to Japan, and soon after, Sunja discovers she is pregnant with his child. She is not upset because she believes in the rightness of “a girl to marry and bear children” (47). When he returns, Sunja tells Hansu she is pregnant. Hansu then tells her that he already has a wife and three daughters in Osaka. Even though she is shocked that Hansu will not marry her, Hansu still expresses his desire that Sunja is carrying a son. In his inner monologue, Hansu remembers his “string of mistresses” who had not missed any periods (50). Hansu asks Sunja to tell her mother about the pregnancy and offers to buy the boardinghouse for them so that Sunja could give him more children...
