Summary
The day of the bank purchase has arrived. Ada still mourns Lark, is nostalgic about home, and afraid for the Kid. Reminiscing and reflecting at night, by herself near the fire pit, Ada is surprised by a gunshot and returns to the bunkhouse to warn the others that the sheriff of Fiddleback has found their hiding spot. They flee on horseback to the wall amid gunfire from a dozen men of the sheriff's posse plus two other sheriffs, one from Casper and Sheriff Branch. Outnumbered three to one, the gang decides to scatter in an attempt to regroup at the hole to have a better view.
When Amity is hit, Ada hides in a tree until captured by the sheriff of Casper who vows to put her in stocks and hang her. Ada realizes that the old woman from the Fiddleback jail must...
