Summary
In the spring, Ada travels to the trading post with Agnes Rose hoping to acquire dynamite in preparation for the Kid's plan. Nótkon turns them away but not before sharing that it is possible to make explosives. At a nearby roadhouse and in disguise, they trade bullets and jewelry for a book about combat and survival skills from the bookseller, the field manual of the St. Louis Militia. The bookseller recognizes Ada and tells her that she is wanted for three crimes: betraying her husband, causing a stillbirth and a cleft palate. He promises not to betray her, however, out of loyalty towards the Kid but fails to understand why they keep looking for trouble. Ada and Agnes Rose debate whether they should kill the bookseller before he turns them into Sheriff Branch but Ada has too strong a conscience. Instead, she...
