Pages 37 through 50 Summary
Culla Holme goes into the nearby town. He stops at the store and purchases for a dime a modest breakfast of cheese and crackers. Culla speaks with a wagon driver outside the store, asking him if he needs help. The wagon driver does not, but suggests that Culla apply at the plant or ask the squire down the street if he needs help. Culla follows his advice and goes to the squire's house and asks to speak to him. A servant fetches the squire, who at first says he has no work. The squire stops Culla as he starts to leave and offers him the job of axing a fallen tree for firewood. Culla accepts the job and is given a fifty cent piece when he completes it. The squire senses asks Culla where he is from and where he lives...
