Chapters 11-12 Summary and Analysis
In chapter 11, Gerry calls Shirley and tells her he has been away so long because his wife surprised him by coming from London. In his absence, Shirley begins to write about everything that has been happening to her, including her relationship with Gerry and the idea of reincarnation. Gerry finally comes to Shirley's hotel room the following night. Gerry insists he loved Shirley and cannot bear to leave her, but in the end he does. Shirley remains in Stockholm for several weeks, writing and thinking about her relationship with Gerry. Gerry comes to Shirley once again and she talks to him about reincarnation. Once again Gerry speaks passionately against the idea of reincarnation despite Shirley's clear interest.
