Z - sometimes referred to as Susan by the other characters - is a genderqueer zombie that was turned into an undead after a car accident that killed the rest of their family. Z uses they/them pronouns as they do not feel like a boy or a girl, though the other, non-main characters often refer to them as a she. Z learns early in the novel that it was their mother that put the spell on them, but since their mother died in the car crash, Z’s body is slowly degrading to the point where they will likely turn into an uncontrollable undead within six months. To combat this, Z, Aysel, and Tommy put a sigil on Z that is meant to replicate the spell with their magic instead of her mother’s.
