Summary

Chapter One opens on the day of a funeral. Z overhears her Uncle Hugh worrying about taking them in. Z looks over their results from a test on transsexual.org where they have been classified as androgynous- both male and female. Hugh tells them to pack and they have an awkward conversation. Z reads over a letter from her pen pal, Chad, where he promises to help. Z lets Hugh throw most of the things in the house away.

Later, Hugh says they should go to Z’s father’s church to say goodbye. Hugh argues with them over wearing a dress they hate. At church, the pastor reveals that Z’s parents and siblings were in the car when they hit ice on the road. Everyone but Z (also called Susan) died.
