Point of View

The novel is written in first person from the limited perspective of Melody Brooks. Melody is a 12-year-old girl who has limited experiences in the world and in mainstream society. Some of those experiences have been negative, especially with her peers. Melody has been ridiculed and is routinely excluded from everyday activities. Even though her parents, caregiver (Mrs. V), and sister obviously love Melody, they have not found ways or places to include her in things such as playing at the playground.
