Summary
Wash takes his college money, which the family calls “Booker money.” He says he is going to work at the cemetery but goes to Tyler where he buys three tickets for San Antonio. He does not manage to see Naomi. At home, his parents are arguing. Rhoda feels they are in danger and wants to leave. Jim refuses to consider leaving, saying he will not allow “rednecks” to ransack their home. Jim believes Mr. Crane will keep control of the angry men. Rhoda believes Mr. Crane is too busy mourning his child. She cites Blacks who have overheard rumblings of violence. Wash is torn as he washes up.
