Summary
The next scene opens in January, 1937. Wash and Jim are supposed to meet with the school board, but the meeting is canceled. At his house, Mr. Crane says he cannot change the budget without the approval of the entire school board. Zane Gibbler says he is the only board member willing to show up. The others would rather ignore the situation. Jim and Wash try to argue that money saved from switching to raw gas would free up money for the New London Colored School. Zane makes it clear they have already given the Black students what they need. Jim placates but Wash argues, saying the books handed down are missing pages.
