Summary
By October, Muffy has taught Naomi to cook the kind of food Henry likes. They live next door to each other in identical houses. Muffy has far better dishes and a radio, but the house also seems happier to Naomi. Muffy has two young sons and a baby on the way. Naomi sometimes sews for Muffy's children and tries to keep up with the work at home. Naomi and the twins care for Muffy's chickens. Naomi keeps some of the grocery money, saving against the need to take the twins away from Henry. One day, Naomi finds a hollow tree in the woods and revels in the feeling of safety. Beto and Cari continue to spend time with Wash who teaches them things such as how to skip stones. The twins go with Naomi when she buys groceries, getting several pieces of candy...
