Head versus Heart

Williams explores the concept of whether people are guided by their heads or their hearts in this novel to prove that, in the end, most people are governed by a mixture of both. In this novel, Ruth is shown as the sister who is focused on her heart and Iris as the one who is led by her heart. Throughout the novel, however, the dichotomy is not so simple, and in the end, it is shown that both of the women are able to rely on all aspects of their character.
