Rome

To Iris, Rome symbolizes the happy part of her marriage with Sasha. After they leave Rome, their lives get more complicated, and Sasha's alcohol habits start to take over their marriage. Iris becomes unhappy, and their marriage starts to crumble. She looks back during Part 2, during a conversation with Phillip, to the time the couple spent in Rome, and she wishes she could go back to the times when they were happy.

Milk

Milk represents the wholesomeness of family life. In Part 2, Iris returns home from a party where Phillip tells her that her husband's alcohol problems are leading to some discretions. Sasha goes out to the Gargoyle, and Iris goes in and checks on their sleeping boys. She imagines her son, Jack, sipping his warm milk before bed. Kip has already given up milk because he believes it is for babies.
