Summary

It is July 1952, and Lyudmila is at work thinking about Marina and how she is grateful for Marina’s self sufficiency, but it makes her uneasy. Soon, Marina will go off to youth camp to be molded by the State. There is a phone call alerting Lyudmila that the Digbys have left the hospital. Lyudmila tells the person to follow them. She listens to the transcripts from the Foxes’ room and confronts Vashnikov about sending people into their room. She suggests he may have been looking for something in Ruth’s safekeeping.

Ruth’s story continues as she and Iris get into an ambulance outside of the hospital, and Fox rides in an official car behind them. Kedrov is up front with the driver. They make it to a train station where the two women and the baby, Gregory, have their own compartment. In...
