Miri
Miri is one of two first-person narrators in Our Wives Under the Sea. Throughout the narrative, she is coping with her wife’s return from a six-month long oceanic expedition. When Leah left for her research trip, Miri expected her to be gone for three weeks. The Centre called her when Leah was supposed to return, to inform her that “there had been a delay” (78). As she waited for news of Leah’s arrival, Miri isolated in the apartment and began obsessively reading blog forums for family members whose loved ones had disappeared. At times she convinced herself that her wife was dead in order to cope with the grief of her absence but did not confide her fears and paranoia to her friends. After Leah’s return, Miri is unsure how to support her wife. Leah’s long baths, silence, and constant nose bleeds continue to dominate...
