Summary
In "Hadal Zone," Leah woke to Jelka’s statue of St. Brendan at the foot of her bed. She found her colleague in the shower, fully clothed. Jelka explained that the running water was the only thing that quieted the voices. Matteo had a dream that the system came back online and the people from the Centre were in still in communication. When Leah and Matteo were otherwise engaged, Jelka went out the escape hatch. They attempted to open the door but “the handwheel that opened the hatch [was] immovable” (180). They heard the external door open, the pressure and movement as Jelka was crushed.
Miri buys a bandage to cover the empty socket in Leah’s face. She crawls into the tub with Leah and sits behind her, propping Leah’s body against her own although she finds it difficult to imagine that...
