Summary
In "Midnight Zone," Matteo attempted to send distress signals after the craft landed gently on the ocean floor. Leah hypothesized that they were in the fifth layer of the ocean, Hadal Zone, the majority of which is unexplored. She could only see blackness through the windows and surmised that they had fallen into a trench.
Leah is locked in the bathroom and Miri calls the Centre once again, more out of habit than hope that someone will pick up and assist her. When Leah departed from her expedition with the Centre, Miri was not there the morning the submarine went under. After three weeks, “the Centre called to tell [Miri] that there had been a delay” without offering further information on Leah’s whereabouts (78).
