Summary
In “Twilight Zone,” Miri remembers the going away party that was hosted by the Centre before Leah’s expedition. She met Jelka, Leah’s colleague, who said that the people from the Centre were weird. Throughout the evening, Miri could not dispel the feeling that “the atmosphere, though convivial, seemed shot through with something unidentifiable” (38). Leah has been locked in the bathroom for hours with her sound machine running. Later, as Miri watches televisions she thinks about her mother and attempts to ignore how much she misses Leah.
After the first hour, following the signal cut out, Jelka stopped praying and began humming instead. Leah and Matteo attempted to ignore her and continued to “batter vaguely at the console” though “there was nothing to fix and so no way [they] could go about fixing it” (43).
