Money
Many of the plot points in the novel, Our Mutual Friend by Charles Dickens, revolve around money. Many of the characters are overly concerned with getting money, whether by honest or dishonest means. The novel begins with the Boffins, former servants who have inherited an estate from their former master. The problems they have once receiving the money, such as Noddy Boffin's supposedly miserly ways and Silas Wegg's blackmail attempt, are highlighted through the novel. Bella Wilfer, a young girl from a poor family, is supposed to marry John Harmon for money and even when that falls through, she seems to believe she needs to marry a rich man to be happy.
