At Six Jolly Fellowship Porters, the inspector is investigating a report of missing lime. Mortimer Lightwood and Eugene Wrayburn discuss how the accusation would affect Jesse Hexam's family, and Eugene expresses interest in her daughter. After they leave the tavern, Eugene stops by the Hexam home and sees Lizzie Hexam through the window. They wait outside the Hexam home with the inspector. Eventually, they see the Gaffer's boat empty nearby.

In Chapter 14, the men aren't sure what could have happened to the Gaffer. They go to look for him and find him dead. Eugene disappears...
