In June 1864, a man named Silas Wegg, who has a wooden leg, sets up a small shop out of a box and wood on a London corner. He only sells gingerbread. A man comes to him and bothers him, saying his name is Noddy Boffin. Wegg has seen Boffin go by before, and Boffin asks him about it. Boffin says he is impressed Wegg can read, because he can't. He offers Wegg money to come and teach him how to read. He tells him to come to his home, Boffin's Bower. Wegg goes and meets Henrietta Boffin, Noddy Boffin's wife. Wegg begins to teach Boffin to read.
