Summary
Part Three: Chapter 45 opens in the second person point-of-view as the reader takes the place of Ivy opening the box. The narrator says the mother could not bear to see the truth of herself in her daughter, so she stole it all away. Spotted memories throughout Ivy’s life surface, including a moment when she wondered how Dana thought magic could stop when it is a natural part of the world. As Ivy keeps her mind from flooding, she recalls becoming Billy’s closest friend with magic between them. After Ivy and Billy kissed, Ivy wondered if her mother would stop harming her potential and admit all she had kept hidden. That is when she realized that Dana stripped away all that Ivy was and was unable to love what was left.
